A silver and gold tipped Naval ‘Sweetheart’ brooch, dated 1912

The brooch depicts an anchor with a applied rose and yellow gold tipped flowers and a rose gold tipped sail boat on the side of the anchor.

The back of the brooch has clear hallmarks for Birmingham 1912 made by Sheldon Bros and therefore is likely to have been given during the First World War.

The brooch fitment is  bar with a simple hook catch.

Measurement: c. 3.5cm long.

Weight: c. 2.7g

These brooches were usually given by a sailor to his ‘sweetheart’ as a memento of their union before he embarked on a naval voyage. Not only were they a reminder of love but they also served as a way of identifying other women in a similar predicament whose lovers were away on voyage.
