Edwardian diamond swallow brooch


This wonderful brooch is modelled as a swallow in flight, it has a ruby cabochon eye and is pave set overall with graduated round old cut diamonds.

The beak is yellow gold, the reverse is also modelled in yellow gold and has a detachable brooch fitment allowing a pendant fitment to be screwed on to be worn as a pendant (pendant fitment not included).

The brooch is set with approximately 2.2 carats of diamonds in total and measures 4.5cm long.
Comes with the original fitted case for George Parry(?) of Cardiff.

The swallow was an important motif in Georgian and Edwardian jewellery. Tradition has it that the swallow mates fo life and so these seetheart brooches were given for engagement gifts or sentimental gifts of promise between lovers or friends to mark their union forever.
